Storia di Camaiore |
| Camaiore history dates back to 190 a.C. when the Romans founded Lucca and decided to settle down some fortifications at Mountain Prana’s feet. So arose Camaiore (Campus Maior). After Roman empire fall the territory suffered some barbaric invasions; Lucca gained her control on the city thanks to Longobards’ help and by the time, with the widespread of Christianity, some churches like Saint Maria and Saint Stefano arose. Camaiore became an important center in the area dominated by Lucca in 1308.> |

| The town was not very well defended, so it suffered some invasions like the one of Pisa. When Lucca managed to conquer Camaiore again, it was decided to build defending walls, which were completed in 1380. They weren’t sufficient to protect the city and in 1440 Florence managed to conquer and dominate Camaiore, which was regained from Lucca in 1470. |

To celebrate this victory a triumphal arch was built outside Lombricese Door. By the time Camaiore lost its importance and Viareggio became necessary to Lucca because of its harbour. In 1860 it was added to the new Italian Reign. |
